Review of “Just Say It” (Single, Aug 28th, 2020) by Goalkeeper

Taken from their upcoming sophomore EP, ‘Life In Slow Motion’ (due out Sept 25th, 2020 via Lost Music Collective), the Philly pop-punk maestros, Goalkeeper, have released their second single, '“Just Say It” - while anchoring their lyrics in some gang-vocal “feels” across the extent of the track. Extending the ingrained emotion fans have come know well since the debut EP, ‘Bad Times Don’t Last’, Goalkeeper brings a very mature tone to this latest batch of singles, specifically “Just Say It” - despite the humorous antics they pull within the pastel colored, exceptional music video…

“…My mind is on the fritz now,
You’re all in a fit now,
I can’t figure out how I feel about it,
You’re calling it quits now,
I’m asking you to calm down,
we both know how much good its doin us now
…”
-Excerpt from "Just Say It" by Goalkeeper

In the previous single, “Happy”, Ryan Beebe demonstrated that his vocal range was more than ready for the next chapter Goalkeeper was embarking on, and once more removes any doubt in “Just Say It” - confidently soaring into the grittier punk aspects of the track without hesitation. Lyrically tugging on bittersweet heartstrings enough to hook listeners of all ages, one can easily associate a life experience to the mood of this piece. As for the chorus, “Just Say It”’s gang-vocals tease out the best of what Goalkeeper can do - engaging both listeners and show onlookers. Aggressive drums by Cody Ritchie matched by the tactful riffs of Marc Juliano allow this track to seamlessly become arguably the catchiest single so far.

For day one fans of the band, the glimpses of evolution and maturation we’ve seen in the new direction is a definitive sign that this group hasn’t lost sight of their “south Philly basement” show roots. As this young act pushes ahead, we will “Just Say It”: if you dig the latest singles AND you love early Goalkeeper, we have a ‘Gut Feeling’ that ‘Life In Slow Motion’ (Releasing Sept 25th, 2020) is shaping up to be a much needed treat for everyone’s 2020! - Nic B
